Energy Recovery Replacement Components & Field Assembled Cassettes

Typically, damaged or worn out energy recovery wheels (rotors) are buried within air-handling units with limited access to and from the equipment location. Removal requires cutting the failed wheel and surrounding sheet metal into small pieces for removal from the building through standard doorways. In turn, replacement components must also be easily carried into the building.

"Many Times the original equipment manufacture is no longer in business"

The Airxchange FA Series was created to answer this need. Units from 5500 cfm to 36,000 cfm are available in factory-tested kits and are provided with our standard 5-year warranty.

In order to insure proper assembly and installation, Airxchange will coordinate the project with your contractor and will supply supervision of the assembly of our component on the job site.
A typical job starts with the removal of the failed rotor and cassette assembly by a local contractor. An Airxchange factory technician then supervises the assembly and installation of the replacement energy recovery component in the vacated space along with help from the local contractor. Minor sheet metal repair and replacement is usually required to complete the installation. Airxchange factory supervision remains on the job until the wheel is turning and functioning as designed.

The Airxchange Experience

Drury Inn Hotel – San Antonio Texas

The Problem – A new HVAC system with outdoor air and energy recovery ventilation was required in an older high-rise bank building being renovated into a Drury Hotel. In order to install the new HVAC unit in the available confined space, the air handler and energy recovery cassette had to be carried in pieces through standard doorways and up fire stairs for assembly in the top floor equipment room. The energy recovery cassette was sized for 25,000 cfm.

The Solution – Airxchange provided an energy recovery cassette, wheel and energy transfer segments broken down into sizes suitable for one man to carry to the equipment room. The cassette was added to the air handler unit when its deck and half walls were completed. Everyone agreed that the field installed version of the Airxchange lightweight, durable cassette made the job easy. The Airxchange wheel is expected to lower Drury’s HVAC operating cost by approximately $29,000 per year.

Osceola County Courthouse - Kissimmee, Florida

The Problem – An existing competitive energy recovery rotor failed due to plugging of the energy transfer matrix and resultant matrix failure. This resulted in a need to replace the entire wheel after only 5 years.

The Solution – Airxchange was called in to replace the failed energy recovery rotor with a 20,000 cfm energy recovery wheel. After assembly and factory test, the field assembled kit was packaged and sent to the jobsite while the facilities manager at the courthouse prepared the air handler to receive the new Airxchange wheel.

Airxchange wheels are designed with independent, easily removable energy transfer segments enabling the courthouse maintenance staff to perform routine maintenance of the energy transfer matrix to insure long lasting performance. The Airxchange wheel is expected to save the courthouse $14,750 annually.

NASA Space Center - Cape Canaveral, Florida

Problem – A 25,000 cfm aluminum wheel in the NASA Space Center failed due to salt air corrosion after only 3 years of service. This created humidity control problems in sensitive vehicle assembly areas.

Solution – Working with FPL and NASA, Airxchange provided and supervised the retrofit of a 25,000 cfm field assembled cassette. The Airxchange polymer/stainless steel wheel construction will stand up to salt air and associated corrosion far better than the originally selected aluminum wheel. FPL paid a portion of the installation cost as part of their program to reduce electrical demand by reducing peak load HVAC operation. With the new wheel in operation, FPL realizes a reduction in peak load of 94.5 KW.
